Cavitation control in commercial liquid systems

Commercial buildings and facilities may use liquid systems for plumbing, fire protection, chilled water, condenser water, and general service water. Cavitation risk can develop when pumps, valves, restrictions, or discharge points create sudden pressure reduction.

Key considerations

  • Noise sensitivity. Cavitation-related noise can be a practical concern in occupied or mechanical spaces.
  • System vibration. Repeated vibration can affect pipe supports, fittings, and nearby equipment.
  • Pressure control points. Valves, plates, and discharge transitions should be reviewed when symptoms occur.
  • Defined operating conditions. Flow rate, pressure, temperature, and pipe size are needed to evaluate risk.

For severe cavitation risk, the system should be reviewed to determine whether a controlled restriction solution is appropriate.
