Cavitation control in chemical and petrochemical systems

Chemical and petrochemical liquid systems require careful review because fluid properties strongly influence cavitation behavior. Vapor pressure, temperature, viscosity, specific gravity, and pressure drop all affect whether vapor forms and where it collapses.

Key considerations

  • Fluid properties matter. Cavitation risk should be evaluated using actual operating fluid data, not water assumptions unless water is the service fluid.
  • Temperature effects. Higher temperature can raise vapor pressure and increase cavitation risk for a given pressure drop.
  • Material compatibility. Metallurgy must be selected for the process fluid and service conditions.
  • Pressure-drop management. Restrictions and control points should be designed around actual flow and pressure requirements.

For chemical service, a system review should include fluid type, temperature, pressure, line size, material requirements, and operating conditions.
