Cavitation control in power generation

In power generation, feedwater, boiler blowdown, and recirculation lines often require large pressure reductions across valves, orifice plates, or other restriction points. When local pressure drops below vapor pressure, vapor bubbles can form and collapse downstream, creating vibration, noise, and progressive surface damage.

Key considerations

  • High pressure differential. Boiler and feedwater systems often operate with large pressure changes that must be managed carefully.
  • Temperature and vapor pressure. Elevated water temperature increases vapor pressure, which can increase cavitation risk for a given pressure drop.
  • Downstream wear. Cavitation collapse can damage piping, valves, fittings, and other downstream components.
  • System reliability. Reducing cavitation-related vibration and wear can help reduce maintenance events and improve predictability.

Because every system differs in pressure, flow, temperature, and line geometry, the application should be reviewed using actual operating conditions.
